The earliest uses of writing were to document agricultural transactions and contracts in ancient Sumer, but it was soon used in finance, religion, government, and law. Writing allowed the spread of these social modalities and their associated knowledge, and ultimately the further centralization of political power.

Writing was invented over 5,000 yrs ago, the oldest known religious texts written over 4,000 years ago. In the medieval era the word 'scripture', "a writing, character, or inscription", became reserved to denote texts of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

The characters of writing and writings themselves are SIGNS, recognized and processed by our BIOSEMIOTIC processes, and central therefore both to the development of our perception and to our evolution.
